“Education is the foundation of progress”

This was how Paolo Rocca, President of the Techint Group, defined one of the company’s core values on Education Day. Hundreds of people from different countries met to share best practices in technical education and reflect on educational trends with specialists. In some countries, Roberto Rocca Scholarships were also awarded to students to highlight the importance of merit in education.

This is how Roberto Rocca Education Day was celebrated in different countries:

In Argentina, Education Day was held at the Roberto Rocca Technical School (ETRR) in Campana, a celebration presided by Paolo Rocca, who was flanked by leading figures from the world of education as well as representatives from the local community. The event was an opportunity to share points of view and reflect on the current educational context as well as define the topics to be addressed in a forward-looking agenda.

Education Day at the Campana ETRR brought together more than 400 people, who listened attentively to talks and panels featuring a range of experts from different sectors of public and corporate life. Carlos Torrendell, Secretary of Education of Argentina; Fredy Vota, General Director of the Dante Alighieri - Hoöters Natur Educational Center and of CIEDA, who is also the current Undersecretary of Education of the Nation, were joined by María Laura García, Tecpetrol’s Chief Human Resources Officer; Graciana Rucci, Leading Labor Markets Specialist at the IDB; María Brown Pérez, the former Minister of Education of Ecuador and current Executive Director of the Crisfe Foundation; Cláudia Costin, the former Minister of Education of Rio de Janeiro and current Director of the Center for Excellence and Innovation in Educational Policies of the Getulio Vargas Foundation; and Mariana Maggio, Doctor in Education, Master and specialist in educational technology, to mention a few.

During the event, Paolo Rocca said:

The community is the backbone of industry, and education is the foundation of progress, fueling the growth of talent within every community. Education, merit, and talent are the three key pillars that drive development and success."

In Mexico, Monterrey, Education Day was celebrated at the Pesquería ETRR, where 975 scholarships were awarded to students. At the ceremony, Máximo Vedoya, CEO of Ternium, pointed out that, "For us, education is the key to driving both individual and collective progress. It's the most effective way to instill values—particularly industrial values—that foster an orderly, committed, and respectful society."

In Veracruz, the event was attended by 160 directors, teachers from educational institutions, and students. Chaired by Cecilia Bilesio, Vice President of Tamsa, A.C., the main topic covered was artificial intelligence. Experts on the subject such as Alejandro Piscitelli, consultant and philosopher, and Nancy Otero, founder and CEO of Kitco, talked about the challenges and opportunities of Artificial Intelligence, while a panel of students from the Roberto Rocca Technical Gene chaired a discussion on this topic. The event included the award of scholarships to 88 university students, 203 secondary-school students and 47 technical high-school students, from 11 public technical schools in Veracruz.

Celeste Villanueva, a Mechatronics Engineering student at the Morelia Institute of Technology, received the Roberto Rocca scholarship for the third consecutive time in 2024. She’s also been gaining valuable job experience working as an intern in the Maintenance area of Pipe Factory 2 at the TenarisTamsa plant. For her, “this scholarship has been such a lifesaver! It helped me finish my studies, cover my semester expenses, and manage food and rent while studying in another city. The whole experience has been amazing, and now that I’m interning at the plant, I’ve picked up so much that really complements my professional training.”

In Santa Cruz, Brazil, Education Day was chaired by Titus Schaar, President of Ternium Brazil, who was joined by Roberta Barreto, the Secretary of Education of Rio de Janeiro. Over 300 high-school and university students received scholarships at the event, which featured keynote speaker Gilvan Bueno. He shared his inspiring journey, from a humble childhood to becoming a successful financial manager and a key influencer for the next generation of entrepreneurs.

In Pindamonhangaba, the event was split into two: in the morning, some 100 people, including teachers and heads from state and private schools (70) joined teachers from Roberto Rocca Technical Gene and Roberto Rocca After School to listen to guest speakers Paula Guimarães, CEO and co-founder of Portal Catalina, and Daniel Dias, the world's greatest Paralympic athlete. In the afternoon, 200 high-school students and 27 university students were awarded Roberto Rocca Scholarships. More than 700 people attended the event, from students and their families to company employees and representatives from the local authorities, such as Luciana de Oliveira Ferreira, Secretary of Education of Pindamonhangaba, and Luis Gustavo Souza, Regional Director of Education. Días gave another motivational talk, this time aimed specifically at young people.

One of the scholarship winners, Samuel Oliveira, said: “Today, we’re taking a big step toward success, and with this award, I know so many doors will open for us. We need to be brave and stay curious about the new opportunities ahead. We have to step out of our comfort zones and chase our goals!”

In the case of Cartagena, Colombia, the celebrations for Education Day were spread out over five events, overseen by Martín Ceballos, Human Resources Senior Director from Ternium. A total of 100 scholarships were awarded to high school students who had proven their commitment to excellence through talent and hard work.

Finally, at Fondazione Dalmine, in Italy, activities were carried out as part of Roberto Rocca Education Day with secondary school students, where the pièce de résistance was an immersive experience in the new laboratories.
